I chose to do my final project on Gresham. My idea was to go from the sketchier side to the more wealthy side and it was much harder than I thought it would be. I wanted to do mine on Gresham because I have been living here for most of my life. In my portfolio, I included pictures of things I usually see on a daily basis. I tried to take all of my pictures during a certain time of day because I know that lighting is very important. Certain times of the day can add strange shadows or glares to your photos. I also tried to incorporate different aspects of composition, including rule of thirds and lines, in my photos. My favorite picture is probably the second one because I really like how all the colors all kind of go together and how the sky is a little pinkish orange.

Final Blog Post.

As a photographer, I enjoy making my vision come through in my photographs. I plan to take my photography to the next level, and focus on fine details of my photos. The style I have created is based around interaction with the camera or a loved one. Whether it be an event or an engagement photo shoot. I want to create  and show the emotion that those people are feeling at that exact moment. The plan to create more emotion from my photographs is to set up lighting properly for the occasion and pay more attention to little detail that are actually very noticeable. I try and use all different angles and perspectives to paint my vision to those viewing my work. And also including my clients vision and ideas as well. I pay close attention to composition and points of focus throughout my photographs. In the future I want to explore more fine art, and creative ideas to use in my own way.

For my photo essay I went with the theme of "The female body". I originally saw another photo essay online where a photographer took up close photos of different types of women's bodies in a tub of colored water, and that really inspired me for my own photo essay. In the beginning I was worried that my essay would turn out uninteresting because all the photos would be very similar to each other because they would be of 1. Of the same model and 2. In the same setting, but as I went along with the shoot I realized I could make the photos a lot more interesting by using different level of contrast in the photo, and also the different color of water help as well. These are my top 4 favorite photos from the photo essay because I feel that they really cqapture the theme of the female body, and they are very different from each other.

For the final project I decided to take pictures of my cousins girls. I like to take pictures of people and try to catch moments. I decided to take the girls to the farm where they sell trees because I thought it would show the winter weather very good. After that, we went home to bake some cookies. 

The organization of my photos was first baking cookies and other that it took: making the batter, cutting out cookies, and then decorating them. For the outside photos, I started with the youngest girl to the oldest, and then all of them together.

The first photo here is one of my favorites photos that I took. I really like the focus and I liked how the framing turned out. Also, I liked how the pink coat stands out from the green background. The second photo is all of the three sisters together. I think its pretty simple, but I liked like that. You can that it was cold outside because of their pink cheeks. The third photo is of the eldest girl mixing the batter. The focus turned out great, and all the details came together. The last one is also one of my favorites photos taken. The younger girls were anxious to start making the cooking, and I like how it shows that they were interested in the process of baking cookies. Also, I like the reflection on the table and the little props that I used: eggs, measuring cups. Overall, I am happy with my photos, and glad I had an opportunity to do it.

THE PROPOSAL

The theme of these images is love. They portray romance, warmth, and happiness. I think anyone who looks at these pictures would smile because it’s a perfect moment to capture. The emotion caught in each frame is real and meaningful. The surprise and the smile afterwards show the excitement and happiness that the moment brought to the subject. I added candles, a blanket, a lantern, and some sparkling cider to enhance the romantic setting of the proposal.

These pictures were taken at the river and there wasn’t one light pole in sight, so the only thing I had to work with was my camera flash. I know that if I had light on the back sides the background would have stood out better and created even better pictures. But I did not have those resources available at the time. Another factor that may have kept these images from being even better was the photographer’s (my) emotions. This is my sister and I was so excited and nervous for her that I might have lost sight of the technical part of shooting these images. Overall I am happy with these pictures because I captured a very special moment in my sister’s life.

I chose these 4 images specifically for a couple of different reasons. I feel like all four of them really capture exactly what I did for the whole journey. The first photo shows waiting for the train which was my transportation to and from Seattle. I like this photo specifically because the lighting is cold and mysterious and it shows the train starting to come down the bridge. The next photo I chose is one that shows the underground bus station that consumes downtown Seattle’s basement. This photo has awesome high contrast lighting and really captures my trip because we spent a lot of the time waiting for the bus. I chose this next photo of downtown Seattle, because it gives you a look inside of the city. This photo does a good job of showing the enormity and contrast of the buildings that are there and also has a nice depth of field showing all of the buildings in focus. My final photo that I chose is of course the view from across Lake Washington. It is your iconic view of the city that you picture in your mind when you think about Seattle. The photo also has a nice focus on the composition showing the boats in the lake and the buildings in the background. I feel that these four images put together show the bulk of my journey to Seattle and do a nice job utilizing the artistic elements that we have learned throughout this course.

 For my photos I went with the theme of people. To make the person or people important in the image I try to make them stand out or to be the most interesting thing in the picture, because a lot of the people I meet at shoots are interesting themselves and I want their personalities to come out in some of the pictures. I made my girlfriend, Karina, stand out by asking her to put on a red jacket and put her by greenery. I also placed the focus point on her eye so that is what will be the most sharp; also the background is softer, so the attention will come back to her eyes. For my friend, Junior, I waited for the soft light from the rising sun to become harsh to cast a shadow on his face. He stands out in this photo because he is the biggest thing in the frame and the brightest part of the photo is the light cast on his face. Even thought the bride and groom don’t necessarily fill the frame they stand out. Everything around them is green so attention goes back to them, also the line of corn brings the eye back to them. The family photo the attention on them because they are the biggest thing in there. If there is anything distracting in the background they are blocking it. Also the short line of fence on both sides leads the eyes back to the family.

Final Project Post

Out of my portfolio these are my favorite four photos. I was going for a theme based on Mom and baby relationship. The love and tenderness in photos with mothers and their children are so precious to me. Being a mom I feel capturing as many precious moments as possible is so important. I look back to the photos I have taken of my daughter as she has grown have just kept my memory fresh and I love to look back and remember the stages of life she has gone through. The two photos of my daughter in black and white I took in front of this excellent window I have in my room, It always seems to give excellent light which has made for really beautiful pictures. For the picture of mom and baby, I took them at my friends house, she has a pretty nice window, I had my back to the window and she was sitting to the left side across from me, the light hit that angle well, for the little drooling dude picture I had my back to the window, and she was holding him right in front of me. I'm super happy with my photos and am excited to have more knowledge to keep going.

Taking all of these amazing pictures in the term, I have decided that I really enjoy taking pictures of animals, nature, and self portraits. So, for my theme I went with nature at first, then transitioning to animals in nature, to everyday pets, and then to the person behind the lens. With the nature pictures I really learned how to make them look the best they can be in this class. With the waterfall, I learned that by turning up the shutter speed it makes a cool effect where you can see almost every droplet in the waterfall and the opposite by turning the shutter speed way down I got pictures where the water was a blur. I just feel that it was a really good example of the theme of what I love to do. 

I also learned in this class how to place things. In the the mountain picture and also in the puppy picture I made sure that they weren't straight on bullet point. By doing this I really learned how to make more of an image then just putting it dead on. This makes my images more unique because someone else would get a different image if they went to a different angle. I feel as if these images were also an amazing example of what I love to do and what I love to take pictures of. 

    Last but not least, self portraits. Everyone’s self portraits are different because everyone comes up with different ideas. I enjoy these the most because I can be whoever I want, and no one will come up with the same idea. The picture that I posted was my complete favorite picture of me. It shows who I am, it’s silly, and fun. The person behind the camera is silly, fun, but also learned a lot from this class and will carry it with my for the rest of my life. Thank you Nancy!

For this final project I wanted to show a process, the process of simply finding the perfect Christmas tree. I planned out my photo essay in a notebook taking into account depth of field, rule of thirds, framing, lines, and perspective. I also tried to make the pictures I took almost look like stilled images from a short film. Whether I accomplished this or not I wanted to create flow and cohesion with my essay. On the other hand though, I wanted to play around with irony for the one of the chainsaw just to add a twist of confusion (for a second) to the expected moments. In addition to this I wanted to highlight the task of choosing the right tree out of hundreds of choices, which is one of the reasons I chose to frame my Dad within the tree branches in my second image. Even though I told a story pretty much beginning to end, I wanted to do so in a way that made people feel the experience or look back on a time when they were picking out the perfect tree.

I chose images that contained most of the elements we studied this term and that I enjoyed photographing. The first photo is showing shallow depth of field of a stump that I found interesting. I like how it draws your eye to the lower right hand corner with the tallest part in focus, also showing a lot of detail in that portion. Then it draws your eye into the center which is not in focus, but you can still see that it is hollow. The second photo is part of my self portrait series which shows a lot of detail in my face, down to my eyelashes. The expression is relaxed, not sad, not happy, just there. The lighting worked well along with contrast of color tones. The third photo was a fun environment shot with elements of action at a pizza place. The lighting is a little dark but it seems to work well with the aspects around the subject. The last photo was another favorite from the environment series of my mother in her sewing room. I love her facial expression and the movement of her fabric. The colors of the thread in the back ground give you a good idea of the extent of her projects and show a great pattern of color. Overall this was a great experience of the elements of photography and I enjoyed learning how to create better photos.

The theme I was going for in my portfolio was my personality. My sometimes dry and crude humor, what I love to do, and overall who I am as a person was represented through many foods and sweets that I love. As I took these pictures, I made sure I set up my photos next to our big open window in our dinning room because as the sun begins to set, our window, that faces Northwest, receives a lot of light. My favorite picture that I took was of course the last picture I took, the cupcake one. I really like that picture because in my opinion the shallow depth of field is a really good element for the picture. In the pictures that I took, I made sure that the lighting was good and that they had a good depth of field when it was needed for the picture. I also made sure that all of my white balances were as close to the real white as I could get them without it ruining my pictures.

These pictures that I put up are some of my best work and they represent me; also, what I like to take pictures of. There are times when I get into nature photography and other times like to take pictures of people. I thought these pictures were some of my best work. All of them had good contrast and the colors in the pictures. Variety is the key to my success because I get bored if I do the same thing over and over again. Just like any photographer would understand they want to stand out in some way, I don’t think I have found a way to stand out yet but hope to find that soon. It was a pleasure being in this class and how to seeing future work posted in galleries from some of you.  Thanks again for all the criticism and being honest that honestly helps me not make the same mistakes again later on in the future when I take pictures.
